What Gives Su Yutang the Right
Not until Su Yutang had left did Lin Meng finally relax completely. Even while speaking with her just now, she had felt as if a hand were clamped around her throat.
Only now did she have the leisure to look around the hospital room she was lying in. It seemed to be a private room—tidy and quiet, with an enormous LCD television. Everything about it matched the VIP rooms she had seen on TV.
She remembered rooms like this cost several thousand a day!
Lin Meng didn't have the money to stay in a room like this for long. She saw that her IV drip still had a little less than half a bottle left, so she wanted to press the nurse call button and have the needle removed. She needed to get back quickly.
Besides, something very important had just occurred to her: she hadn't even asked for leave today!
Just as she was about to get up, the hospital room door banged open with a loud crash, startling Lin Meng so badly she flinched.
Before she could even process what was happening, an anxious figure rushed toward her, and Lin Meng gradually made out her face.
No way—she had just seen Su Yutang off, so why was Yun Huaizhu here now?
Yun Huaizhu looked extremely worried as soon as she saw her. She gripped Lin Meng's shoulders and looked her up and down. “How are you? That woman just now—she didn't do anything to you, did she?”
Lin Meng shook her head. “No. But... Miss Yun, why are you here?”
Seeing that Lin Meng was fine, the suspense in Yun Huaizhu's heart finally eased a little. As for why she was here, it went back to when Lin Meng had collapsed the day before...
Lin Meng had collapsed against Su Yutang without warning. It had startled Su Yutang, and it had given Yun Huaizhu a heart-stopping moment as well. She didn't even know how she had managed to overcome her disgust for Su Yutang and step forward to touch the person who had fallen into Su Yutang's arms.
It was only when she felt Lin Meng's burning forehead that she realized Lin Meng had a fever.
But as luck would have it, the paparazzi she had arranged through Aunt Fang—the ones meant to get in Su Yutang's way—chose that moment to appear. And Su Yutang, also wanting to avoid being dragged into a mess, had personally brought the unconscious Lin Meng to the hospital.
Since Su Yutang had been in the room the whole time, Yun Huaizhu could only wait outside.
Yun Huaizhu hadn't slept all night. She was terrified that Su Yutang might do something terrible to Lin Meng because of what Lin Meng had said to Su Yutang before fainting.
Thankfully, Lin Meng was all right.
...
Just as Yun Huaizhu was lost in thought, Lin Meng pressed the nurse call button. Yun Huaizhu snapped back to the present, her brows—which had only just relaxed—drawing together slightly again. “Are you feeling unwell?”
Seeing her concern, Lin Meng shook her head quickly. “No, no, nothing's wrong. I'm fine now... it's just that this room is too expensive. I need to call the nurse to have the needle removed and check out.”
She needed to get discharged quickly. Even if she couldn't make it to work today, she still had to go ask for leave. Company rules were clear: an unexcused absence meant a pay deduction.
Her savings weren't much to begin with, and she'd spent quite a bit over the past few months. At this rate, she really would be living on air.
At that, Yun Huaizhu immediately stepped forward and pressed her back onto the bed. “Don't move around. You have viral influenza, and your fever once spiked over forty degrees Celsius. You just broke it, so rest properly here!”
Lin Meng scratched her head, puzzled. “I had a fever last week, but I'd clearly already recovered...”
Seeing how muddled she looked, Yun Huaizhu couldn't help shaking her head with a sigh. “Viral influenza can recur. You can't be discharged until you've fully recovered. The doctor said if you spike a high fever again, it could easily trigger myocarditis. You could drop dead, you know?”
Lin Meng was alarmed, her eyes widening in shock. “A... a cold? Is it really that serious?”
Yun Huaizhu looked at her utterly seriously. “Yes. If you don't want to die, then be good and let them treat you properly here!”
Lin Meng had weathered many high fevers alone before, but this time it seemed toughing it out wouldn't cut it. She wasn't quite ready to die yet, so fine—let them dock her pay.
Being sick left her no choice.
Lin Meng nodded, a little frightened. “Mm, but I still can't stay here...”
It was too expensive. By the time she recovered, the hospital would have drained her savings dry. How was that any different from killing her outright?
As if reading her mind, Yun Huaizhu pressed her firmly back onto the bed. “Don't worry. The hospital fees are already paid in full. You won't have to spend a cent before you're discharged. Just lie here obediently and wait to get better.”
When Lin Meng heard she wouldn't have to pay, the anxiety in her heart vanished at once. But soon she started worrying about something else. “But... I can't just spend your money for nothing. Even though I don't have that much right now, I can write you an IOU—a legally binding one, with a fingerprint...”
She genuinely felt it was wrong to take someone else's money for nothing. But before she could finish, Yun Huaizhu reached out and covered her mouth mid-chatter. “Enough, I don't need it!”
Lin Meng didn't know what had angered Yun Huaizhu, but after that outburst, she did fall silent and didn't dare speak again.
Yun Huaizhu realized she had probably raised her voice just now. She quickly withdrew her hand and explained, “What I mean is, I was the one who lured you out. If you had rested properly at home, your cold might not have recurred. The responsibility was mine from the start, so you don't need to feel you owe me anything.”
At that, Lin Meng lowered her head. Yun Huaizhu couldn't see her expression, but she sensed Lin Meng seemed hurt.
Had she been too harsh just now?
She truly couldn't understand how someone could make such a fuss over a little hospital fee. She hadn't wanted to vent her temper on Lin Meng at all.
Besides, this was Su Yutang's private hospital. Who would dare charge someone Su Yutang had brought in?
Lin Meng lowered her head and thought for a moment, then finally decided to accept Yun Huaizhu's explanation. But there was still one thing... She reached up with her free hand—the one without the IV—and touched her neck.
But the next moment, she felt nothing there... Lin Meng panicked instantly. She even had the urge to rip out the needle and go search for that necklace right away.
That was three million. Three million!
Seeing Lin Meng's expression suddenly turn tense, Yun Huaizhu quickly reassured her. “The necklace was uncomfortable while you were lying down, so it's under your pillow.”
There was a trace of barely detectable resentment in her tone when she said this... The necklace she had given Lin Meng had been taken off by Su Yutang. What gave her the right?
Hearing this, Lin Meng quickly lifted the pillow to check. When she found the necklace lying quietly beneath it, her heart, which had seized up in sudden panic, finally settled completely.
